What Professional Landscaping Services You Can Implement During a Nashville Winter

Snow on a home in Nashville

Have you ever wondered what landscapers do in the winter? Here’s a hint: they landscape!

While it may seem like most of the world shuts down and outdoor activities are suspended from December to April, professional landscaping services do not take a winter vacation.

If you want a beautiful landscape in the spring, it is critical to prioritize winter landscaping.

With a cold winter in full swing, now is the time to hire landscaping services to care for your property all year round. If you are looking for winter landscaping ideas, here are just a few of the services offered by The Parke Company.

Why You Need Professional Landscapers

Overwintering

Contrary to popular belief, even if a particular plant cannot survive the conditions of winter, it doesn’t mean that your garden is a lost cause for a few months out of the year.

The gardening practice known as overwintering is a perfect way to care for and preserve the life of your plants year round, even when Mother Nature turns her back on your garden.

Typically, overwintering your garden plants involves carefully removing them from the soil, replanting them into new soil in a planter or container indoors, and caring for them in a garage or basement where temperatures will not actively harm your plants.

To avoid killing your plants in the process of uprooting and transferring them, contact a landscaping professional to learn how to safely remove them from their soil.

Or better yet, just let the experts do the dirty work for you.

Irrigation System Care

An irrigation system can be a great asset for property owners who value the precise care of their garden – or those who just want a hands-off way to care for their lawn.

In the winter, however, irrigation systems can become more of a headache and a danger than a helpful part of your home.

If you’ve ever had a pipe in your home freeze, then you know how dangerous it could be for your irrigation system to get too cold in the winter.

In Nashville, while snow and freezing temperatures can certainly be a reality, even mild temperatures require irrigation system care.

In the winter months, levels of precipitation can change drastically, which means that you will need to adjust your irrigation system to avoid too much or too little watering that can lead to the ruination of your winter landscape.

How Landscaping Design Services Can Help Your Curb Appeal

Maintained lawn in Nashville

On top of all of the other wild changes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the housing market has seen a dramatic shift over the last two years. As all experts can agree, the market is certainly favoring sellers, and there may be no better time than now to put your house up for sale.

Even in a seller’s market, you cannot rely on your house to sell itself. There are plenty of home renovations you can make to help increase your home’s value and shorten its time on the market to make a quick sale.

While bathroom renovations and kitchen updates are sure to make your house more attractive to buyers, they require huge investments of time and money to yield any value for your home.

If you are looking for a cost-effective and timely solution to help boost your home’s chances of selling, look no further than your home’s front yard. Here is how landscaping design services can help your curb appeal and get your home sold quickly.

How Landscaping Improves Your Home

Lawn Care

A beautiful green lawn is crucial for those looking to put their house on the market. It is also one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to improve your curb appeal.

It can be easy to let your lawn go to the wayside with all of the other tasks in your plan when selling a house. It is even easier to forget about your lawn if you have already moved into a new house across town or out of state.

An unkempt lawn is unattractive to buyers, but it is also a signal to home invaders that the house is vacant, which will put you at risk for a break in.

Lawn care is the perfect landscaping service to give you great bang for your buck and get your home closer to a sale.

Softscapes and Hardscapes Installation

While lawn care is an easy and cheap way to improve your home’s curb appeal, there are ways to make a more dramatic impact on the look of your home through landscaping design services.

Softscapes and hardscapes are the perfect ways to increase value and bring your home from drab to gorgeous without lifting a finger.

Hardscapes are curb appeal landscaping that can also be quite functional. Consider smaller additions like a paver from your driveway to your front door or a decorative walkway to add aesthetic beauty while making your property more accessible via paved walkways.

Softscapes may not have as much utility as hardscapes, but they certainly have a dramatic visual impact.

The installation of flower beds, shrubbery, and mulch can help create a home that looks truly alive.

Prospective homebuyers want to envision themselves in your home, but it may be hard to look past an unsightly yard without thinking about the investments it may take to bring it back to life.

When you contact the team of experts at The Parke Company, they can help you to devise the perfect soft or hardscapes to boost your curb appeal and make your home the most attractive one on the block.

What Are the Most Popular Types of Pruning?

There are plenty of ways to care for your lawn and garden. From irrigation system installation to leaf removal to something as simple as lawn mowing, property owners have a number of options for tending their yards.

It doesn’t take an expert gardener to know that pruning is a great way to protect the health of plants. Even the most inexperienced gardeners know that a pair of pruning shears can be a plant lover’s best friend.

What you may not have known, however, is that pruning is a lot more than just cutting away branches and twigs to create shapes.

There are many different types of pruning that can serve many different purposes. Here is everything you need to know about the most popular types of pruning with tips from The Parke Company.

Most Popular Types of Pruning

Thinning Cuts

Thinning cuts are known by several names, such as removal cuts, collar cuts, or natural target pruning cuts.

The purpose of thinning cuts is to remove side branches of a parent branch or remove a smaller branch from the trunk. There are a number of benefits to thinning cuts.

From an aesthetic angle, thinning cuts can help with canopy thinning: a process that includes a whole host of its own benefits, including the increased growth of interior branches.

Thinning cuts also help to preserve the branch defense zone, which gives trees and other plants an advanced defense against internal decay.

Reduction Cuts

Reduction cuts are another beneficial form of pruning. This type of pruning is the inverse of thinning cuts and actually removes a larger branch back to a smaller side branch.

This method involves making cuts to fully bisect the branches at an angle. While sometimes necessary, this method can be tricky because this type of pruning does not create a branch defense zone and leaves the branch without much defense against decay.

Reduction cuts are required, however, because this type of pruning is the only method that will significantly shorten a tree.

Heading Cuts

While certainly not the last type of pruning, heading cuts can be a perfect pruning method when you need to remove the tip from a branch.

Typically, this method is used to create density in a tree because heading cuts release side buds which results in increased growth at the place where the branch has been pruned.

When pruning bushes or shrubs, heading cuts can create a very dense canopy, resulting in a woody base due to the increased shade on the lower portion of the shrub.

How to Enhance a Small Yard

Small yard with lots of trees

Purchasing a new home is one of the most exciting milestones in a person’s life. Whether you are a first-time homeowner or moving from one home to another, there are a number of factors to consider when purchasing a home.

For many people, location and size of the home are non-negotiable, and in the process of prioritizing these things, the landscape often gets put on the back burner. If you have had to sacrifice the size of your yard to be closer to work or to get the right number of bedrooms and bathrooms, you don’t have to settle for a lackluster backyard.

Here is what you need to know about enhancing a small yard and making the most use of your space with some tips from The Parke Company.

Ways to Enhance a Small Yard

Tree Trimming

Trees add a lot to the beauty of a landscape. They can offer shade in the summer and add a majestic quality to the look of your yard. Unfortunately, trees are one landscape feature that can make your yard look and feel significantly smaller, especially if your property is already smaller than you would like it to be.

It is important to remember that, while the diameter of a tree’s trunk may be fairly small, it will take up far more space than just the body of the tree. A tree’s roots will spread out far into your yard and may make a large space unusable for other things you may want. Tree roots would grow through and crack any pavers below it, and tree roots completely eliminate the possibility of things like a pool or fountain.

Your trees’ canopy can also minimize the look and feel of your yard. As lovely as shade may feel in the summer, a heavy tree canopy makes your yard dark and cramped under tree branches and significantly limits the plant growth that can occur.

Depending on your desire for your yard, you may first consider crown thinning to open up your yard to the sun and make the space seem bigger through greater exposure to the sun. If you want to make more use of your space through hardscape installations and pavers, you may even consider full tree removal to get the most of your square footage.

Landscape Installations

Landscape installations of all kinds can help you to make the best use of the space you have. Even if you don’t have acres of land to use, there are certainly ways to capitalize on every inch to create the yard of your dreams.

Making the best use of your space is all about how you want to use it. Amateur gardeners may consider getting raised beds installed if your yard’s soil is less than ideal or cramped space challenges your gardening prospects.

For those looking to host backyard parties, the savviest backyard may be structured with pavers and other hardscape installations that prioritize function over beauty.

In any case, an experienced, professional opinion is the best way to make sure that you can bring your landscape dreams to life, even in a cramped yard.

National Recycles Day 2021: Parke Company Tree & Landscape at Radnor Lake

Employees of The Parke Company outside

The Parke Company team recently donated our time and resources to our friends at Radnor Lake for National Recycle Day. The Parke Company decided to take action because we wanted to help our local community and a cause that we believe in—what better time to do so than to jump in during National Recycle Day.

Though there are many ways businesses and people alike can contribute to a better community, we decided our contribution would be to cover the trails with mulch from recycled tree chips. This gave us the opportunity to reuse trees that had already been cut down. Even better, it allowed us to refrain from cutting down more trees to make this mulch.

On November 15, 2021, The Parke Company team brought in a large pickup truck full of mulch and got to work! Our volunteers used wheelbarrows to spread the mulch throughout the trails, making sure that it created a beautiful, more eco-friendly space without hindering the natural ecosystems or suffocating trees.

Mulch has many benefits, especially in the fall. It provides insulation going into the colder months, allowing small ecosystems and organisms that make a huge difference to thrive and become stronger for spring. Mulching can also prevent erosion, which can damage our parks and our trails during rainy Tennessee autumns. Mulch adds an extra layer of protection against moisture loss in plants and trees and suppresses weeds from growing in abundance. Adding mulch from recycled trees is a beautiful way to give back to an ecosystem that has already given so much by not hurting it further.

It ended up being a successful and fulfilling day for all involved. The Parke Company was able to give back to a community that has served us so well for years. For images of our process or more information from our friends at Radnor Lake, follow this link.
